Guide to Apprenticeships for Parents
As a parent, you want to ensure that your child has the best possible start to their working life. Many young people prefer not to follow an academic route, often because their strengths are based in practice rather than theory, maybe they want to start earning and building their skills straight from school or maybe they just want to work more than they want to study.
Apprenticeships were designed by training organisations, the Government and employers to meet employers' and industries' demands for capable and motivated young people at craft, technician or junior management level. An Apprenticeship combines a real job with high quality training and nationally-recognised qualifications giving young people the opportunity to gain experience and earn while they learn.
An Apprentice is employed from day one and generally spends four days each week with their employer and one day at College.
Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of occupational areas and are available at two levels "Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship" and each occupation has its own framework. The framework is the structure of the Apprenticeship programme and lays out exactly what each Apprentice has to achieve. The framework usually covers an NVQ a technical certificate and a package of the key skills that employers look for such as communication, IT, problem solving, maths and working with others.
Apprenticeships are an excellent combination of practical skills and highly respected and internationally recognised qualifications which will not only provide your child with the skills needed to progress in their career, but also the qualifications which can open up further study opportunities for example with degrees, professional qualifications or management training.
If your son or daughter is interested in taking up an Apprenticeship, we will conduct an in-depth Initial Assessment to help them decide on the best options for them and help construct a programme which will best meet their needs within the local employment market.
