Employers' Guide

Thousands of businesses locally and nationally have benefited from the Apprenticeship scheme over the years. The scheme is a cost-effective way to develop your workforce and help ensure your business stays at the cutting edge.

What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are government-funded schemes designed for people aged 16+. The Cambridgeshire Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funds the College's apprenticeship programmes.

Normally, an apprentice will spend four days a week with their employer obtaining the practical skills and job knowledge necessary for their chosen occupation. One day a week will be spent at college doing practical tasks, learning necessary job theory and developing key employment skills. All apprentices have an agreed training plan.

Apprenticeship Frameworks:
Apprenticeships are available for many vocational occupations. They all have set time frames for completion.

Frameworks consist of:
  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 or 3
  • A Technical Certificate (in some Apprenticeships)
  • Key Skills (in, for example, communication, IT or maths)
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

Staff in our Apprenticeship Centre will be able to advise about framework content for the apprenticeship programmes that we offer.

How can Apprenticeships help your business?

Apprenticeships:

  • Provide a source of enthusiastic and talented employees
  • Help you to solve your skills shortages
  • Train your employees to high occupational standards
  • Save you money by providing funded training packages
  • Help you to plan for the future

General benefits to your business also include:*

Real value for money
Apprenticeships can make your organisation more effective, competent, productive and competitive by addressing your skills gaps and needs directly.

Improved productivity
Apprenticeships equip your staff with the skills and knowledge to do the job better. And because they are motivated, they work harder and more effectively for your business.

Motivated people
As a result of their training apprentices are motivated and keen to learn. Their enthusiasm can also invigorate other staff members. By offering Apprenticeships you will find it easier to recruit and retain the right people for your organisation.

Relevant training
Apprenticeships are designed by businesses in your sector to meet the needs of your business. This means the training is always relevant and it is tailored to the needs of your sector by people who genuinely understand what you do.

Avoid skills shortages
Apprenticeships allow you to invest in your business' future. By taking on an apprentice you can acquire specialist skills for your business that allow you to keep abreast of new technology.
